KATHMANDU, Dec 25: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) has proposed new provisions concerning distribution of citizenship to the sons and daughters of parents who obtained their own certificates in 2008 under the new Citizenship Act, 2063 BS.

MoHA has already forwarded the provisions to the cabinet for the latter´s nod. According to ministry officials, the existing Citizenship Act is silent on whether the sons and daughters of parents who obtained citizenship in 2008 will also be entitled to Nepali citizenship (once they are 16 years or above).[break]

"We want the cabinet to take a new decision for sorting out the existing confusion on whether the sons and daughters of parents who acquired citizenship in 2008 are eligible for citizenship certificates if they show their parents´ certificates. That is why we forwarded the proposal seeking a solution along these lines," a MoHA official told Republica.

After scrapping the old citizenship act, the government had introduced a new act in 2008 with the aim of distributing citizenship to those who were born in Nepal before 1990 AD. About 170,000 people who were born before 1990 AD had obtained their citizenship certificates then. A time frame of only two years was allowed for getting the citizenship.
