KATHMANDU, Sept 22: Minister for Information and Communications Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta on Thursday said the criticisms directed against the four-point deal between UCPN (Maoist) and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) is “unfortunate”.

Mohan Baidya faction of the UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML have said that the four-point deal poses a threat to national sovereignty. [break]

Addressing a function at Reporter´s Club, Gupta said, “I would like to challenge them to hold public discussion at Tundikhel and prove which point of the agreement poses a threat to national sovereignty.” He said such allegations have hurt the sentiments of Madhesi people.

Gupta who is also Chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Republican (MPRF-R), a constituent party of UDMF, claimed that Baidya faction of the UCPN (Maoist), NC and CPN-UML had agreed on the issues incorporated in the four-point agreement.

He, however, said that the UDMF inked the four-point agreement concluding that the NC and UML leadership would not succeed in taking the peace process to its logical conclusion.

Gupta also defended the agreement on formation of a Madhesi unit in the Nepal Army (NA). He questioned how the recruitment of Madhesis in the NA would undermine national sovereignty.
