Great lover of Nepali language Prof. Tahira passes away

KATHMANDU, July 21: Pakistani litterateur Prof Dr Tahira Nighat Nayyar, who has made great contribution to the development and promotion of the Nepali language and literature, died on Friday afternoon at the age of 66.



She passed away while undergoing heart surgery at National Medical Center Karanchi, Pakistan.



Dr Tahira had attended the first international convention on Nepali language that was held in Nepal in 2066 BS, representing Pakistan´s literary community.



Dr Tahira was a great lover of the Nepali language and literature. She taught at the Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus for over a decade. Similarly, she taught the Urdu language at College of International Languages (Bishwa Bhasa Campus).



She was prolific in bilingual translation in Nepali and Urdu languages. She received the Nai Derukh International Award, Rudraraj Puraskar, Nepal-Pakistan Friendship Award and the Devkota Shatabdi Honour.



Dr Tahira was the first person receiving the Nai Derukh Award (instituted by the Nai Publications) carrying a purse of Rs 300,000.



Prof Dr Michael Hutt from London and US anthropologist Prof Dr Theodore Riccardi received the award after Tahira.
