KATHMANDU, Nov 25: The government has decided to launch a special national-level awareness campaign to disseminate information about the new constitution to the general public.

A cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on Tuesday decided to organize a month-long awareness campaign across the country to inform the public about all the major provisions ensured in the new constitution from December 7 to January 5.

It has been two months since the promulgation of the new constitution on September 20. Tuesday's cabinet meeting decided to launch a campaign with the aim of distributing copies explaining salient features of the new constitution across the country, informed Minister for Information and Communication Sher Dhan Rai, who is also the spokesperson of the government, adding that the government has named the campaign "people's constitution right in front of the people".

He said the meeting has decided to launch the campaign through the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development.

"As people have been divided for and against various key provisions of the constitution and attempts have been made to mislead the commoners about the new statute, the government has decided to clarify the public about the new constitution," said Minister Rai.

Since the promulgation of the new constitution, stakeholders had been pressing the government to take the statute to the public immediately for many people have been staging protests in the southern plains of the country due to lack of proper knowledge about all the major provisions in the constitution.

Minister Rai said the agitating parties have been misinterpreting the constitution to their benefits and enticing the public for further protests in the Tarai region as the government took no measures to inform the public the key provisions and rights guaranteed in the constitution.

After the government was heavily criticized for failing to take the constitution to the public, the Ministry of Law, Justice, Constituent Assembly and Parliamentary Affairs started to disseminate information about the key features of the new constitution through all the government media outlets from Tuesday.

Dili Raj Ghimire, spokesperson of the ministry, said that the ministry has started publishing major features of the new constitution in various languages -- Tharu, Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Maithali, among others.
