Govt to provide subsidy on fuel to students

KATHMANDU, Sept 11: The Ministry of Commerce and Supplies (MoCS) decided on Tuesday to bring the proposal to the cabinet for providing kerosene and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) at subsidized prices to students effective from September 17.



Deepak Subedi, joint secretary at the MoCS told Republica that the decision was made with the consent of the Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, who is also looking after the portfolio of the MoCS.[break]



“Prime Minister will bring the proposal to the next cabinet meeting to provide relief to the students for endorsement,” said Subedi.



According to Subedi, a student can get subsidy of Rs 250 per LPG cylinder for maximum of four cylinders per year and maximum of 10 liters of kerosene per month with the subsidy of Rs 10 per liter under the proposed concession.



The subsidy is estimated to add financial burden of Rs 500 million per year on the government.



Subedi said students can get reimbursement after producing the kerosene and LPG bills from account section of the concerned colleges. Around 500,000 students are expected to benefit from the subsidy.
