KATHMANDU, March 3: The government has decided to felicitate record holder taekwondo player of the South Asian Games Deepak Bista with a cash reward of one million rupees. The cabinet meeting on Wednesday took a decision to this effect.

The government has also decided to bear medical expenses of the players injured in the lift breakdown during the 11th SAG held in Bangladesh from January 29 to February 9. [break]

Bista, who won four gold medals in the SAG, has won gold medals in all the South Asian Games from the 8th to 11th editions.

Bista has won two bronze medals in the Asian Games and he is the only Nepali male player to participate in the Olympics through qualification.

Bista expressed his joy following the government decision. “For me it is a very good decision, I´ll use the money for my treatment,” he told myrepublica.com.

Bista had appealed the Youth and Sports Ministry to provide financial support for his treatment. However, the ministry asked for doctor´s certificate and other proofs with Bista. “I was disappointed but I´m happy that the prime minister and the cabinet decided to felicitate me,” he said.

Though Bista was happy about the government decision, he demanded that other medalists also be given their due. “Other players also had fought for national pride and won the medals. It will be unfair only to reward me,” said Bista.
