The government has also defined unskilled, skilled, semi-skilled and highly skilled workers. According to sources, youths working as labor, cleaner, helper, sweeper and watchman have been defined as unskilled labor, whereas those receiving training on their respective works have been defined as semi-skilled manpower.

Those working as overseers and waiters have been defined as skilled manpower, while those working as chartered accountants, doctors and engineers have been termed highly skilled workforce.

“We are also getting recommendations from other labor destinations like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Malaysia,” Acharya said, adding, “We felt the need to raise minimum salary of workers considering high inflation rate and cost of living.”

The government had fixed minimum monthly salary for overseas workers at $125 in 2003.

“We are evaluating the recommendations made by Nepali ambassadors in respective labor destinations," said.

Acharya said they had also received recommendation for minimum monthly salary for UAE. “But the figure is very high. We need to revaluate it,” he added. He also said the government would soon fix minimum salary for workers in other labor destinations.

Officials at the Ministry of Labor and Transport Management are constantly in touch with Nepali envoys in major labor destinations through Ministry of Foreign Affairs to fix minimum monthly salary for Nepali workers.
