KATHMANDU, July 14: Under the aegis of a trade union, a number of government employees staged a demonstration inside the Singha Durbar on Tuesday demanding a flat raise in their salaries, according to our corespondent Kosh Raj Koirala.

The union -- Rastriya Swatantra Karmachari Milan Kendra -- organized the protest, saying the budget unveiled on Monday failed to meet their long-standing demands on salary hike and other allowances. The government drivers affiliated with the union did not allow any vehicular movement inside the central secretariat from 9.30 a.m. until noon.

"We want a flat raise of Rs 5,000 for gazetted as well as non-gazetted employees since the price hike has affected everyone," said Krishna Bhandari, president of the union.

The protestors dispersed at around noon but have vowed to continue with their protests until their demands are met.
