KATHMANDU, Dec 11: The Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9 caused massive nationwide disruption, leading to the loss of 2,353 jobs and inflicting total physical damage worth Rs 84.45 billion, according to a government assessment.
The committee formed to evaluate the losses and prepare a reconstruction plan submitted its report to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday. Committee Coordinator and National Planning Commission Secretary Rabi Lal Pantha presented the summary at the Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar.
According to the report, employment of 2,999 people was affected, while goods and services worth Rs 13.84 billion were disrupted due to the protests. The committee, formed on September 21 under the coordination of the National Planning Commission Secretary, delivered its report within the 75-day deadline.

The assessment shows that all seven provinces suffered damage, with 54 districts and 262 local levels reporting losses. The protests resulted in 77 deaths—20 on September 8, 37 on September 9 and 20 thereafter. Of the 2,429 injured, 17 are below 13 years of age, while 1,433 injured fall between the ages of 13 and 28.
The report highlights that overall physical damage totals Rs 84.45 billion, affecting 2,168 institutions. A total of 2,671 buildings were damaged, accounting for losses of Rs 39.31 billion. Likewise, damage to 12,659 vehicles resulted in losses worth Rs 12.93 billion. The government and public sector alone faced losses amounting to Rs 44.93 billion.
Private sector losses are estimated at Rs 33.54 billion, while community and other sectors suffered losses worth Rs 5.97 billion. Of the government losses, 68 percent fall under the federal government, with the provincial and local levels accounting for 10 percent and 22 percent respectively.
The committee has also proposed a reconstruction plan, estimating a budget requirement of Rs 36.30 billion. Of this, Rs 19.98 billion is expected to be needed for rebuilding damaged buildings, Rs 6.16 billion for vehicles and Rs 10.14 billion for other physical infrastructure.
Reconstruction costs are estimated at Rs 24.69 billion at the federal level, Rs 3.74 billion at the provincial level and Rs 7.86 billion at the local level.
