KATHMANDU, Nov 25: Members of the Gen Z group staged a protest in Surkhet on Tuesday opposing the arrival of CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet, who had travelled to the city to speak at a program organised by the youth wing of the party.
While accusing Basnet of attempting to “politically influence” local youths, the protestors said his visit was “unwelcome” in the district.

Basnet’s scheduled appearance prompted authorities to heighten security across Surkhet. Police enforced tight security checks along all major roads and movement of people around the Ghantaghar area was heavily restricted.
Tensions rose after the Gen Z group reportedly attempted to obstruct the program in Birendranagar. Police responded by deploying additional teams throughout the city, mainly around the event venue and major intersections considered sensitive in terms of security.
Despite the protests, Basnet proceeded with his scheduled engagements, though the program was conducted under strict security vigilance.
Authorities said no major clashes were reported, but they were prepared for any escalation as the group continued to voice strong objections to Basnet’s activities in the region.
