Gaurika concludes tournament with six nat'l records

KATHMANDU, June 8: Swimming sensation Gaurika Singh, yet again, put up a brilliant show on the concluding day of the 20th Open National and Age Group Swimming Competition, breaking three national records at the swimming complex in Satdobato on Monday.

She had broken three national records on the opening day, Sunday, concluding the tournament with six national records. This is her second tournament in Nepal.

She had sent ripples in the swimming complex breaking three national records on the first day in open women's 100m breaststroke, open women's 100m and open women's 200m breaststroke record.Twelve-year-old Gaurika came to limelight breaking seven national records in her debut tournament in the 12th Galaxy Cup Inter-school Age Group Swimming Championship last year.

She bettered her own record in the open women's 100m backstroke clocking one minute and 13.13 seconds. Her former best was one minute and 17.97 seconds, which she created during the 19th National Swimming Championship last year.

Rashika Paudyal finished second with the timing of one minute and 44.64 seconds as Yashna Khatry finished third. Her second national record came in open women's 50m freestyle with the timing of 29.44 seconds. Her impressive timing eclipsed Sofia Gadegaard previous record of 29.53 seconds, created during 1st Lumbini National Championship last year.

Shreetika Singh took second place in the podium in this category as well with the timing of 33.78 seconds while SwikritiGhising finished third clocking 35.25 seconds.

With the timing of two minutes and 19.72 seconds, Gaurika improved her previous national record in the open women's 200m freestyle time trial. Her previous best was two minutes and 26.28 seconds.

In other events, TejBahadurMajhi won open men's 400m gold with the timing of six minutes and 40.84 seconds, leaving behind BasuDevChaudhary (six minutes and 57.81 seconds) and PurnaOli (seven minutes and 12.40 seconds.

Yam KumariGhale won open women's 800m gold clocking 14 minutes and 50.87 seconds as KeshariThapaMagar and Yam KumariBhujel took second and third places.

Manish Chitrakar won open men's 50m butterfly with the timing of 32.22 seconds as JanakRai and BijayShrestha claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.

DeveshManandhar won open men's 400m gold completing the distance in five minutes and 26.28 seconds as RudraKatwal and AviRanjanShahi claimed silver and gold respectively.

Devesh also claimed gold in open men's 200m backstroke clocking two minutes and 54.41 seconds, leaving behind NiteshManandhar and SubbuBista.

SoniraBista won open women's 200m breaststroke with the timing of three minutes and 31.22 seconds. Roja KC SubbuBista finished second and third respectively.

Manish Chitrakar claimed gold in open men's 100m freestyle clocking one minute and 04.93 seconds, leaving behind Devesh and Nitesh.

KiranKarki won open men's 100m breaststroke with the timing of one minute and 17.70 seconds as TikaThapa and RupeshChaudhary finished second and third.

NiharikaTuladhar won open women's 50m breaststroke with the timing of 39.81 seconds as Sonira and Subbu finished second and third.

Manish also won gold in open men's 50m backstroke clocking 36.98 seconds as Devesh and Nitesh finished second and third.
