KATHMANDU, Nov 9: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar has stressed on the upgradation of roads connecting Nepal with China.
Chinese team starts upgradation work
At a meeting of the parliament's development committee held today DPM Gachchhadar said Nepalis would not have faced such crisis if we had upgraded roads with China.
"If we had upgraded roads connecting to the northern border checkpoints, we would not have to face the current crisis," Gachchhadar said at a meeting of the parliament's development committee, adding, "Upgradation of roads with China is a must despite challenges." He said the northern checkpoints should be developed as alternative roads to India.
Discussions are underway to upgrade roads connecting with China. The meeting dwelled on the upgradation of Tatopani checkpoint in Sindhupalchowk, Kerung checkpoint in Rasuwa and Korala checkpoint in Myagdi.
Similarly, Madhav Kumar Karki, director general of the department of road, said roads to Tatopani and Kerung checkpoints can be upgraded to double lanes within one to two years, said Karki, adding, "The government should allocate Rs 3 billion for this purpose immediately."
"Korala checkpoint can also be brought into operation within two years. It requires around Rs 2.5 billion rupees," said Karki.
The meeting has also focused on other possible roads connecting with China.
