KATHMANDU, June 9: G-7 leaders have pledged to contribute in the reconstruction of Nepal but have also called on others to join in supporting the reconstruction agenda. A press release issued by the Office of the Press Secretary of the White House on Monday stated that 'supporting the reconstruction in Nepal' was one among other agendas in the meeting which ended in Germany, Monday.

Stating that they will continue to provide emergency assistance as needed, the G-7 countries also pledged to provide reconstruction assistance as per the priority of the Government of Nepal (GoN).

An excerpt from the press release says, "We are ready to consider requests for bi- and multi-lateral financial and technical support as well as reconstruction assistance in alignment with the priorities of the Nepalese government." The statement has come at a time when donors are voicing fears about proper utilization and good governance in fund mobilization through government channels.

GoN is also mulling the formation of a high-level authority to implement the reconstruction activities on a fast track and in an effective manner. It plans to hold a donors' meeting on June 25 to mobilize funds for the reconstruction of damaged public and private infrastructure and historical monuments.

Government officials believe that donors, both multilateral and bilateral, are likely to announce their support during the conference and the government will also arrange a visit by donor representatives to the affected areas in the course of the conference.

They are also to strive to seek the restoration of the lost and damaged cultural treasures of Nepal.

The press release says that G-7leaders are deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by the devastating earthquake in Nepal.

Political leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdon and the United States had gathered in Germany on Sunday and Monday to discuss economic issues.
