From drought to deluge: Madhesh battles back-to-back climate extremes

Fortunately, the region, officially declared drought-hit by the government, finally has been receiving rainfall over the past few days—offering farmers some relief. But that relief seems to come at a cost, looming threat: flooding.

KATHMANDU, Aug 4: Despite it being early July, farmers in Madhesh were reeling from drought due to a prolonged dry spell. Paddy seedbeds dried up and cracks appeared in parched fields. Fortunately, the region, officially declared drought-hit by the government, finally has been receiving rainfall over the past few days—offering farmers some relief. But that relief seems to come at a cost, looming threat: flooding.
