First death from new COVID variant reported in Nepal

KATHMANDU, June 24: A woman has died in Nepal due to a new variant of the coronavirus, marking the first fatality linked to the latest strain in the country.



According to the Ministry of Health of the Koshi province, the deceased was a resident of Suryodaya Municipality in Ilam. She passed away while undergoing treatment at Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar early Tuesday morning.

She had been admitted to the hospital on Monday after experiencing breathing difficulties for about a week. Doctors confirmed she died at 6 am during treatment.


Currently, seven other individuals are receiving treatment for the same variant—four from Jhapa, two from Morang, and one from Ilam.
