Police said nine houses of five families were gutted when the fire spread from a fire burnt to repel mosquitoes in a cowshed owned by Sitaram Mandal.
The fire destroyed three houses of Jayaram Mandal, two houses of Gangai Mandal, two houses of Dillaram Mandal and two houses of Sitaram Mandal, according to a local, Dhirendra Sah.
The fire also left six domestic animals killed. All goods and clothes in the houses were also destroyed, the victims said.
The fire was doused by the locals one hour later.
