KATHMANDU, Nov 12: Ministry of Finance (MoF) has increased vigilance over the staff of the Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DoMLI) after the ministry received a number of complaints against the DoMLI’s employees.
Following the Gen Z movement of September 8-9, the MoF has maintained hotline and direct email services to file complaints against corruption. Under the provision, general people can have direct access to email Finance Minister Rameshore Khanal, MoF’s email and hotline telephone number.

According to an official of the MoF, complaints have been received in Finance Minister Khanal’s email against a number of staff of the DoMLI. “The staff have been accused of collecting ransoms from businesspersons showing fake complaints filed at the department,” the source said.
The MoF has increased surveillance through various methods on employees who call businessmen to the DoLMI, make unnecessary inquiries, intimidate them, and take unfair advantage. A MoF team deployed for this purpose is reportedly collecting information on the phone records, transactions, and behaviors of suspicious employees.
The interim government formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Sushila Karki has allowed three powerful departments to work under their regular ministries. Previously, the ousted PM KP Oli had brought the DoMLI, Department of Revenue Investigation (DoRI) and the National Investigation Department (NID) under the Prime Minister’s Office, which was supposed to give leeway to the cadres of the ruling political parties.
Currently, the DoMLI has been set under the scope of the MoF as the line ministry. Time and again, Finance Minister Khanal has reiterated that the government has adopted a zero tolerance policy towards corruption, especially by the employees working in the offices under the MoF.
