KATHMANDU, May 1: The government has appointed former Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari as a member of the Governor Recommendation Committee formed to fill the vacant position of the central bank’s chief. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.
Earlier, on March 23, a committee was formed under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel to recommend a new governor.

Former Governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai, who was a member of the committee, resigned due to the protracted recommendation process, which was delayed by differences between the two main ruling parties—the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML. Following his resignation, Adhikari was appointed to the committee.
The committee also includes Dr Bishwo Paudel, former Vice-Chairperson of the National Planning Commission. After Governor Adhikari’s term ended on April 5, Deputy Governor Neelam Dhungana has been serving as the acting governor of the central bank.
