BUTWAL, Feb 24: The ongoing general convention of Youth Association Nepal (YAN) has been extended for a day after the election process was deferred to forge consensus on the future leadership of CPN-UML´s youth body. The convention was scheduled to end Sunday.

The Election Committee formed to elect new leadership of the youth body could not complete its tasks in the stipulated time as more than 500 candidates from two different panels led by Mahesh Basnet and Niraj Acharya filed candidacies for the election.[break]

Earlier on Sunday, the Election Committee had published a final list of 1,356 general convention representatives. However, the election process was deferred as the organizer delayed giving the final name list of representatives to the election committee.

While Basnet is close to KP Sharma Oli, Acharya is considered close to the party Chairman Jhalanath Khanal. Jhapat Rawal, who had earlier announced to contest for the post of president, withdrew his bid Sunday and filed candidacy for the post of vice president.

Altogether 240 police personnel including 60 Armed Police Force (APF) personnel have been deployed in the convention venue keeping in view possible clash between the two rival factions. The convention will elect 137-member new leadership.
