KATHMANDU, July 9: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, in his capacity as Chancellor, appointed Prof. Deepak Aryal as the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Tribhuvan University (TU) on Wednesday.
The recommendation committee, led by Minister for Education, Science and Technology Raghuji Pant, had proposed the names of Prof. Khadga KC, Prof. Aryal, and Prof. Binil Aryal on July 7. From the recommended names, PM Oli appointed Aryal as the new VC.
Mainali and Aryal appointed as advisors to PM Oli
As per the TU Act 1992, a three-member selection committee headed by Minister Pant was formed to select the new VC.
The position had remained vacant since the resignation of former VC Keshar Jung Baral on March 28. Baral, appointed for a four-year term, resigned after just 13 months in office. PM Oli accepted Baral’s resignation on April 10 and appointed Rector KC as acting VC on April 15. Since then, Rector Prof. Khadga KC had been serving as acting VC.
During Baral’s tenure, the university saw repeated shutdowns due to protests by part-time and contract teachers, making it difficult for him to carry out duties from his office.
According to the provision, an acting VC can be appointed for up to three months when the post remains vacant.
On May 20, PM Oli formed the three-member recommendation committee under the Joint VC Minister Pant to select the new VC.
