Decision to move rhinos from CNP irks locals

CHITWAN, March 1: Angered by the decision of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation to move rhinos from Chitwan National Park to Bardiya National Park, locals staged a protest outside the District Administration Office on Monday. Local conservationists have submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer (CDO) Binod Prakash Singh urging him to stop the transfer. The authorities are set to move rhinos from Chitwan National Park to Bardiya National Park (BNP) on Tuesday.

Five rhinos are being transferred from the lower belt of Sukhibhar area of the CNP to the Babai Valley in Bardiya. In the past, rhinos shifted from CNP to BNP have failed to survive, a major reason cited by the protesters why they are against the transfer.


Fanindra Raj Kharel, director general of the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation, claimed that rhinos failed to live on in the past in lack of security and poaching, but there was no such risks now.
