Daffodil, Radiant, Kavya win titles

KATHMANDU: Daffodil, Radiant and Kavya School won titles in the Third The Excelsior Cup on Tuesday.



Daffodil claimed the senior boys´ basketball title defeating NIMS, champion of the last two editions, in the final held in the capital.[break]



 Daffodil registered a narrow 47-46 win over NIMS riding on 18 points from Amin Tamang, who was adjudged the most valuable player.



Radiant won the trophy in the junior boys´ section defeating defending champion and host The Excelsior in the final. Ajay Khatri scored 14 points to give Radiant a 37-24 win. He also won the most-valuable-player award.



Meanwhile, Kavya emerged champion in the junior boys´ five-a-side football competition. Kavya edged LRI 1-0 in the final as Sanjay Khatri scored the all-important goal one minute from time in the 40-minute match. Khatri was declared the most-valuable-player.



The eight-day event featured 12 teams each in senior and junior basketball and 16 teams in football.



Janajyoti, Deep Jyoti into semifinals




KATHMANDU Sept 24: Janajyoti Higher Secondary School of Rautahat and Deep Jyoti Vidyashram of Banke stormed into the girls´ semifinals on Tuesday in the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school National Football Tournament being held in the capital.



Janajyoti defeated Arunima Higher Secondary School of Kathmandu 3-0 to advance as the winner of Group A. Sunita Yonjan struck twice for Janajyoti and Ritu Tamang netted the other goal.



In another match, Deep Jyoti crushed Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya 9-0 to enter the semifinals as the runner-up of Group A. Geeta Rana scored four goals and Nirmala Upadhyaya achieved a hat-trick for Deep Jyoti. Bhawana BK netted two goals.



In the boys´ category, Bhootpurva Sainik Higher Secondary School of Syangja, Creative Learners Academy of Kathmandu and Sautha Higher Secondary School of Morang secured berths in the last eight of the competition.



Bhootpurva Sainik thumped Bal Srijanalaya of Kathmandu 5-0 to advance to the quarterfinals as the runner-up of Group C. Ajeez Din Miyan, Bimal Manandhar, Dharma Bahadur Thapa, Amrit Shahi and Milan Sinjali scored a goal each for the winning side.



Creative Learners Academy beat Jana Higher Secondary School of Surkhet 2-0 to enter the knockout stage as the winner of Group C. Ujjwal Bata and Simon Pradhan were on target for Creative Learners.



Similarly, Sautha of Morang progressed as the runner-up of Group D defeating Gyanodaya Residential School of Lalitpur 2-0. Bishal Tamang scored both the goals for Sautha.

In the day´s last match, Setidevi Higher Secondary School of Sindhupalchowk overcame Kathmandu Valley Higher Secondary School 3-1. Suresh Khatri scored twice to seal the victory after Amrit Majhi had given an early lead to Setidevi. Himal Shahi scored a consolation goal for Kathmandu Valley.
