Counting in Rolpa uncertain, UML demands repolling

NEPALGUNJ April 11: The counting of votes cast in Ropla-2 constituency has become uncertain after the CPN-UML demanded repolling in the Thawang polling center. [break]

The confusion was created after CPN-UML accused the Maoists of capturing the polling booth in the Thawang polling center.

The UML’s candidate has appealed to the Chief Election Officer for repolling. Earlier, the Chief Election Officer, Krishna Kamal Adhikari, had said the counting would begin at 2:30 pm.

“We cannot say for sure whether there will be repolling. All decisions will be made as per the law,” Adhikari said.

The central committee member of CPN-UML and its in-charge of Rapti, Prakash Jwala, said that other political parties too will support the UML’s stand for repolling in Thawang.

Jwala further blamed the Maoists for assaulting his party’s agent Shanta Kumar Oli, who is also the secretary of the UML’s district committee. Accusing the Maoists of capturing the booth from 2 pm onwards, he said that the assaulters cast 86 per cent vote after chasing away Oli. Jwala also complained that the Maoists even misbehaved with the constituent assembly member Shanta Chaudhary in the center.

A total of 42.78 per cent vote has been cast in Rolpa-2. 12 candidates, including one independent contender, are contesting for the by-polls.
