Clash of Clans has enthralled gamers since 2012 when it was first rolled out by Supercell, a Finnish video game company. Initially developed for iOS, it went on to be the highest grossing game before it was made available for Android users in October, 2013. Its extension to Android heightened its popularity. However, it gained momentum in Nepal only in the last one and half year.
A player has to join a clan which is made up of a maximum of 50 players. The clan leader can choose co-leaders to help manage the clan. The players will build a community and make armies, raise troops, and build other defense items with which to attack other players. Clan members help each other by supplying extra troops which they can use to attack others. There are four kinds of resources in the game—gold, elixir, dark elixir, and, gems—which help players buy or upgrade assets. These resources have their own buildings where they can be stored and produced.
If you are an avid player of Clash of Clans, you know that you have to be very vigilant in order to avoid attacks. One has to make sure that you are making your presence felt, whether by moving a building or even simply by tapping on the screen.
It was back in November 2012 in the UK that Semon Limbu, 26, first started playing the game. He played religiously till he returned to Nepal in February 2014. "I stopped playing for about seven months because I didn't have constant access to the Internet. Then I set up the connection at home and started again. There are 45 members in my clan. We have formed a group on Viber where we talk about our strategies and what's going on in the game."
The game has young and old, men and women enthusiastically playing the game. According to Limbu, he has come across players as young as eight years old as well as middle aged women. "Once I even came across a clan here in Nepal where only females were allowed. They weren't even allowing their male friends to join in. But the bookmark system hadn't come out yet so I forgot which clan it was," says Limbu.
The bookmark is a helpful update because it allows a player to mark other interesting clans and check on their progress. Like many other games, players can choose to wait for hours or even days to upgrade their assets. The higher the level one is in, the longer it takes to build or upgrade. For instance, a high level player has to wait for 12 to 16 days to construct a building or pay online with money for instant gratification.
Clash of Clans is the third popular free game in Google Play Store in Nepal right now after Candy Crush and Gun Fu: Stickman 2.
The interactive nature of the game is perhaps what makes this game so addictive. The clan members have to communicate almost daily because they have strategies to plan and work out. Limbu adds, "The game is also constantly updating and coming out with new additions which keeps us all hooked."
