Chinese officials meet Maoist, NC leaders

KATHMANDU, Sept 11: Leaders of the UCPN-Maoist and Nepali Congress (NC) met the visiting Chinese delegation separately on Saturday and discussed the long-existing bilateral relations between China and Nepal.



During the meeting, the Chinese delegation expressed concern over the stalled peace process in Nepal but reiterated that they are not for interfering in the internal affairs of the country. [break]



“Our policy is not to interfere in the internal affairs of your country and we expect other countries to do the same,” Maoist Vice-chairman Narayankaji Shrestha quoted the Chinese delegation as saying.



Led by He Yong, Vice-premier and Secretary at Secretariat of the 17 Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the 21-member Chinese delegation arrived in Kathmandu on Saturday. The delegation is on a goodwill visit to Nepal.



Maoist leaders Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Mohan Baidya, Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Shrestha and Ram Bahadur Thapa were present at the meeting.

Yong told the Maoist leaders that China wants to see the completion of the peace process and that the UCPN-M as the largest political party should play constructive a role for national consensus. He assured that China is ready to extend its help to establish peace and stability in Nepal.



“We thanked them for their good wishes and support to Nepal,” Shrestha said. The Maoists told the delegation that Nepal government and the party upholds one-China policy, while the delegation thanked Nepal for discouraging anti-China activities in Nepal.



The meeting also focused on strengthening ties between the Chinese Communist Party and the UCPN ((Maoist).



The Chinese delegation also handed over the China"s communist party"s invitation to Maoist Chairman Dahal.



Similarly, NC Acting President Sushil Koirala and leader Prakash Man Singh also held a separate meeting with the delegation. Koirala said China was worried about peace and stability in Nepal. He said the meeting also focused on strengthening bilateral ties.
