A joint meeting of poultry farmers, entrepreneurs and retailers on Tuesday decided to decrease the price.[break]
With the fresh adjustment, price of chicken in Kathmandu Valley has come down to Rs 300 per kg. Similarly, price of live chicken has been reduced by Rs 10 per kg to Rs 220 per kg. Farmers will get Rs 210 for a kilogram of live chicken.
Janga Bahadur BC, president of National Chicken Sellers´ Association, said the joint meeting decided to reduce the price of chicken due to increase in production with the onset of summer. “Production of chicken is rising as many farms have increased the number of chicks due to continuous rise in chicken price over the past few months,” said BC.
The association raised chicken price seven times over the past two months citing drop in production due to bird-flu outbreak in different parts of the country. Chicken became dearer by Rs 105 per kg during the period.
“Drop in production by around 35 percent sent chicken prices soaring in those months. Now chicken price will go down as production has started to increase all over the country,” BC said. “Also, farmers do not want to keep chicken in farms for longer period due to high mortality rate during hot summer days.”
Officials of the association said chances of bird-flu outbreaks are low in summer as the bird-flu virus is active in winter.
“As demand for chicken normally goes down by 10 to 15 percent during summer, rise in production will definitely push chicken price downwards in the coming days,” BC said.
