Chairman Regmi calls on UN Gen Secy Ban

KATHMANDU Sept 29: Chairman of the Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi met with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary- General of the United Nations at the UN Headquarters on Sunday morning.



During the meeting, discussions were held on the preparations for the Constituent Assembly elections in Nepal scheduled for November 19, the progress achieved so far in the peace process and advancement of the political process aimed at political stability and inclusive development. [break]



The Secretary General appreciated the role played by Nepal in contributing troops for peacekeeping operations, often in most difficult situations. He also appreciated the role played by Nepal in advancing the cause of the LDCs and its engagement in post-2015 development agenda.



The Secretary- General emphasized the importance of bringing all political parties on board for the Constituent Assembly elections.



Regmi stated that preparations for the November 19 elections were going on in full swing, and the election would take place on the stipulated date.



The chairman stated that 90 percent of the parties and the people were in favor of polls. Reiterating the commitment to free and fair election for which the Government was formed, he said that the Government, along with the High Level Political Committee (HLPC), were putting their best efforts to bring the dissenting parties on board for the election.



Chairman Regmi also noted that Nepal has announced a plan for graduation from the LDC status by 2022 and that the strategy has already been incorporated in the thirteenth national plan.



The Secretary–General was positive on providing all possible support to Nepal for holding of the elections. Reference was made on the visit of the Under Secretary-General Mr. Jeffrey Feltman to Nepal in March this year in regard to the assessment of the need.



Meanwhile, Mr. Robert Blake, US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian and Central Asian Affairs, paid a courtesy call on Chairman Regmi today and discussed on various aspects of Nepal –US relations.



The need to move forward Millennium Challenge Corporation Threshold Project activities and activate the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement signed between the two countries was emphasized on the occasion.



Later in the evening, the Chairman held an interaction with the representatives of the Nepali expatriate community in New York where views on ‘Second Election of Constituent Assembly: Necessity and Challenges; Role and Responsibility of Election Government’ were exchanged.



While responding to the queries of the participants, the Chairman said that the present government is committed to holding Constituent Assembly election in a free and fair manner.
