Central Security Committee discusses planned protests in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, March 23: The Central Security Committee led by Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak met today to analyze Kathmandu's potential security scenario later this week with rival factions set to organize parallel protests on March 28th.


The Social Front composed of CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Nepal Samajbadi Party, and the Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN plans to hold a protest at Bhrikutimandap in defense of republic while medical practitioner Durga Prasai's "Nation, Nationality, Religion, Culture, and Citizen Protection Campaign" will lead a demonstration at Tinkune, with supporters of the former king participating.


A senior official who attended the meeting said that the meeting focused on the potential security challenges on Friday.

Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Dawadi, IGP Deepak Thapa, Armed Police Force IGP Raju Aryal, National Investigation Department Chief Hutaraj Thapa, and representatives from the Nepal Army attended the meeting


The meeting also reviewed the activities of the former king's supporters, the protest by Swargadwari victims, and the planned demonstration by temporary teachers.


The Central Security Committee analyzed the protest by the "Swargadwari Guthi Victim Tenant Farmers' Struggle Committee" as a potential security challenge. On March 2, during a clash in front of the Bakery Café in Baneshwar, protesters from the committee attacked DSP Ganga Paudel, leaving him injured.


At that time, authorities released 5 women and 7 men who had been arrested after they apologized. The Swargadwari Guthi of Pyuthan owns land in Dang, where farmers have been working and demanding tenancy rights. They have been protesting in Kathmandu for some time now.
