As many as three CCTV cameras have been placed at Bhanu Chowk, the main market of Dharan in the preliminary phase on the initiative of Vigorous Nepal, a non-governmental organization. [break]
The CCTV cameras have come into operation from Friday after inauguration from SSP Yadav Raj Khanal of Koshi Zonal Police Office (KZPO). According to Vigorous Nepal, the surveillance cameras were installed in cooperation with the local authorities-- Dharan Municipality Office, Baraha Jewelry and KZPO, among others.
Two cameras have been placed at Bhanu Chowk and a camera at a road to Putaliline of Dharan- 9. The CCTVs would be monitored by Area Police Office at Bhanu Chowk.
Rohit Darnal, president of Vigorous Nepal informed that the cameras are equipped with latest automatic technology. The cameras can capture images up to a distance of 200 meters.
He also said around 16 surveillance cameras will be placed in the latter stages. "Around Rs 400,000 has already been spent on installation of the surveillance cameras. We require an additional Rs 600,000 for maintaining video records," he added.
Likewise, SSP Khanal said the CCTV cameras would help fight unlawful activities in Dharan. He further pleaded stakeholders to contribute to installation of surveillance cameras in other parts of the city.
Similarly, Inspector at District Traffic Police Office,Dharan, Nabin Adhikari said the installed technology will also help manage traffic in the city.
