Buffon wants to see Nepal play in major tournaments

KATHMANDU, March 3: Former Italian captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon expressed his desire to see Nepal play in major tournaments such as the Asian Cup, World Cup, and other global football competitions.


At a press conference on Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kathmandu, Buffon said that Nepal needs to invest in infrastructure and other areas to compete in major football events. He encouraged the country to aim high, stating that their goals would be achieved one day. Buffon, the goalkeeper for Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning team, arrived in Nepal on Sunday. Reflecting on his childhood, he recalled that Nepal's flag appeared new and unique to him, and he felt that his dream of visiting the country, known for its supreme mountains, had finally come true.

Gianluigi Buffon expressed excitement and happiness about his visit to Nepal and thanked the organizers for the opportunity. He is in Nepal for the final of the KP Oli Cup and described the opportunity as unforgettable for both him and his wife. Buffon shared that his love for work and dedication to giving his best every day have helped him maintain good fitness.


While he is here for the final of the KP Oli Cup, Buffon expressed a desire to return to Nepal. Next time, he plans to stay longer, explore the country, and visit its spiritual sites.


Buffon arrived as the chief guest for the final of the KP Oli Cup Championship football tournament. The final, scheduled for Monday at Dasarath Stadium, will feature the departmental team, Tribhuvan Army Club, competing against the former champions, Machhindra Football Club. He is one of the biggest names in world football to visit Nepal.


Buffon, who won the 2006 FIFA World Cup, played 176 international matches. He captained Italy in 80 of those games. Buffon played in five consecutive World Cups, from 1998 to 2014.
