KATHMANDU, Jan 25: The wait is finally over for readers who were eagerly waiting for writer Buddhi Sagar's next book. The author released his new novel 'Phirphire' on Saturday at Nepal Academy in Kamaladi. 'Phirphire' was released by the writer along with one lucky reader Nishant Khanal whose birthday was on the same day.

'Phirphire' is set in the years between BS 2044 and 2053, and tells the story of two friends from the Tarai region. According to the writer, the book was written in the course of three years. He added that while it doesn't reflect the present situation of the Tarai region, it is about the times when hill-origin people and Madhesis lived together in harmony in the same community.

The book comes alive with characters such as Pichku Majhi, Rakku Dada, Ukhane, Juthimaya, and Cheel Gadi. Though the story is told through flashbacks, it will not bore the readers, assured the writer.

"I've tried to make the readers emotional instead of aggressive. I want the book to be thought-provoking," he said. 'Phirphire' is published by FinePrint who was also the publisher of the writer's previous novel 'Karnali Blues' five years ago. FinePrint's Niraj Bhari explained the book couldn't make it to the market earlier due to the difficulties imposed by the earthquake and then the border blockades.

The book launch was attended by a large crowd. They were entertained by singer Kali Prasad Baskota who sang 'Tyo Mojako Football, Tyo Hariyo Chaur' which was used to promote the novel.

'Phirphire' is 544 pages long and is available in the market for Rs 542.

How has the response been so far?

I've had people telling me that they've finished 70 pages or 100 pages so far and they're enjoying the book. It feels good. I hoped my readers would enjoy 'Phirphire' because I was also happy with my work. Actually there's another book that I had completed but I wasn't satisfied with how it turned out so it will probably require some work before I give it for publishing.

What was the original date planned for the release of 'Phirphire'?

Well I had completed my final draft on April 24 last year. And the earthquake occurred the next day after which everything went haywire. The publishers had also lined another book for release before mine so the next date set was September 26. But we had to push it back because of the border blockades.

Who is your favorite character from this book?

There's this individual called Kohinoor Jhakri in the book who was interesting to write. He is above 65 years of age and it was a fascinating journey for me to write about him, his thoughts and feelings. I'm in my thirties and it was quite easy to write about characters my age or younger. While writing this character I had to really think about how he'd feel about this or that situation.
