Bijisha Shrestha wins U-18 title

KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Bijisha Shrestha of DAV won the U-18 girls´ singles title in the Seventh LA/JTI Inter-school Junior Open Tennis Championships on Friday.



Shrestha defeated Manjita Nyachho of St Xavier´s 6-3, 6-1 in the final played on the court of host Little Angels´ School (LA). Likewise, Bibhuti Karki of St Xavier´s beat Ira Raut of Pennwood Academy 6-1, 6-1 in the final of U-14 girls´ singles.[break]



Renjan Lama and Anjan Thing of Nepal Police School (NPS) clinched the U-14 boys´ doubles title. They defeated the pair of schoolmates Dipesh Khatri and Prashant Basnet 6-4, 7-5 in the final.



Similarly, Cathy Mathema and Medhavi Giri of Ullens School won the U-14 girls´ doubles title defeating Chhiring Sherpa and Ayusha Rai of LA 6-2, 7-5 in the final.

Meanwhile, Samrakshak Bhushan Bajracharya and his younger brother Samyak Bhushan, both of Shuvatara School, reached the final of U-12 boys´ singles event. Samrakshak defeated Renjan Lama of Nepal Police School (NPS) 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinal. Likewise, Samyak registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Dipesh Khatri of NPS to set up the first ever final between the brothers.



In the U-16 girls´ singles, Bibhuti Karki struggled past Mayanka Rana of Rupy´s School 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinal to set up a title clash with Mayanka´s younger sister Mahika, who beat Bijisha Shrestha of DAV 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Ira Raut of Pennwood thrashed Khushi Pandey of The British School 6-1, 6-1 to set up a U-12 girls´ singles final with Karuna Gauchan. Gauchan of Rato Bangala pulled off a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Cathy Mathema of Ullens.



In the U-16 boys´ singles, Abhishek Banstola of Pokhara edged past Saksham Karki of Rato Bangala 6-3, 6-3 while Avash Malla of Rato Bangala beat schoolmate Avaya Gauchan 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinal.

According to tennis coach Rameshwar Thapa, five final matches will be played on Saturday, the last day of the championship.
