Bicameral legislature suggested

KATHMANDU, March 1: The subcommittee under the Constitutional Committee (CC) of the Constituent Assembly (CA) formed to settle disputes in constitution writing has decided to adopt bicameral legislature in the new statute.



The subcommittee headed by UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal will deliberate on and determine parliament´s jurisdiction at the next meeting scheduled for Thursday.[break]



“We at today´s [Tuesday] meeting decided to adopt bicameral legislature. We will take a decision on its functions and leadership system at the next meeting,” Dahal told reporters after the subcommittee meeting at Singha Durbar on Tuesday.



Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel informed that they agreed to name the houses as the House of Representatives and National Assembly in the new statute.



“We will discuss the legislature´s jurisdiction at the next meeting,” said Paudel.



Dahal, Paudel and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal are members of the five-member subcommittee. Likewise, a team of other leaders, including Dev Gurung, Bimalendra Nidhi, Surendra Pandey, Upendra Yadav, Dr Prakash Chandra Lohani and Sapana Malla, have been nominated to assist top leaders in resolving the disputes in constitution writing.

The subcommittee is entrusted with settling around 75 disputes by March 14. The CC will then start preparing an integrated draft of the new statute by incorporating all the preliminary drafts prepared by the thematic committees.
