ITAHARI, Feb 23: Life in districts in the eastern region was out of gear on the first day of the three-day shutdown called by Khas-Chhetri Ekta Samaj, which is demanding a Khasan state.



Long and short distance passenger vehicles in Sunsari, Morang, Jhapa, Dhankuta, Terhathum and other hill districts remained off the road while factories, shops and educational institutions remained shut. [break]



Shutdown enforcers however allowed ambulances, hearses, press vehicles, vehicles of diplomatic missions and those carrying essential goods.



They vandalized a passenger bus in Itahari while our Dharan correspondent Rohit Rai reports that Manoj Pharmaceuticals Company inside the industrial area in Tinkune, Dharan-8 was also vandalized.



Strikers smashed glass doors of two rooms of the administration block of the factory.



Central vice-chair of the Samaj, GB Khadka, said shutdown enforcers had to resort to vandalism after the factory did not heed their request to shut down.

Meanwhile, life was affected in farwestern region on Thursday due to a strike called by Sudurpaschim Jagaran Manch. The Manch had called the strike demanding the whole farwestern region as an undivided province in the new federal set up.



Pushkar Raj Joshi, president of the Manch, claimed that the strike was peaceful and a success.
