Ban urges parties to set aside differences

KATHMANDU, April 30: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on Nepal´s political parties to set aside their differences and show maximum flexibility during negotiations over the next month to reach agreement on the contents of a new constitution before the imminent deadline.



In a statement, Ban said that peace process remain “overdue and incomplete due to continuing differences among the parties” though it has already delivered significant achievements. Ban´s statement comes at a time when only 28 days are left for the Constituent Assembly deadline to expire. [break]



Ban urged all parties “to exert utmost effort in reaching consensus on outstanding issues, including the integration and rehabilitation of Maoist army personnel and fundamental issues regarding the new constitution.”



He stressed that the peace process was now at a “decisive point,” and he called on all sides to “exercise maximum flexibility in seeking a common political ground to enable them to fulfill their commitments.”



He has also assured all necessary support from the UN to the parties in their efforts to conclude the ongoing constitution writing and peace process.
