KATHMANDU, Jan 20: For over three and a half decades, Sher Bahadur Deuba has been the unchallenged political figure in Dadeldhura. In the seven elections held in the district since 2048 BS, the former Prime Minister never tasted defeat, securing consecutive victories and going on to serve as the nation’s premier five times.
With Deuba opting out of the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, Dadeldhura is set to witness a historic change: the district will elect a new representative after 34 years.
Will Congress reign Dadeldhura, again?
The question on everyone’s mind is: who will fill the vacuum left by Deuba’s exit?
From the Nepali Congress (NC), Nain Singh Mahar is stepping into the fray. A former central committee member of the party and ex-president of the Nepal Students’ Union, Mahar brings political experience and local recognition.
Chakrabhadur Snehi will contest from the CPN-UML. The former National Assembly member seeks to capture the constituency for the party. Man Singh Mal has been nominated by the Nepali Communist Party, while Dr Tara Joshi of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, who earlier won the provincial assembly seat in Dadeldhura as an independent, has resigned to join the parliamentary race.
Deuba’s legacy in Dadeldhura remains unmatched. He was elected from the district in 2046 BS, 2051 BS, 2056 BS, 2064 BS, 2070 BS, 2074 BS, and 2079 BS, marking a political dominance that will be tested like never before in this upcoming election.
