AFC Prez Hammam provides financial aid to Bista

KATHMANDU, Aug 2: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Mohammed Bin Hammam has presented ailing former national football custodian and handball coach Ranjan Bista with Rs 370,000 ($ 5,000) in cash out of his personal fund.



Bista is suffering from lung and bone cancer and is undergoing regular medication at B&B Hospital. He is leaving for New Delhi, India on Wednesday for further treatment. [break]



All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) President Ganesh Thapa and other officials handed the cash to Bista at his residence at Dhapakhel on Monday.



According to a press release issued by ANFA, Bista was extended the financial supported by Hammam following an initiative taken in this connection by ANFA.



Earlier, ANFA had provided Bista Rs 250,000 for his treatment at the time of the Martyrs Memorial A Division League.



So far Rs 1,700,000 has been spent on his medication in Nepal, including daily medical expenses of Rs 15,000.



Bista, in the course of his decade-long footballing career starting in 1974, represented Nepal in seven different international tournaments.



Bista, also known as ´tall man´, took charge of the posts in the first edition of the SAF Games in 1984. Nepal had secured first position in football on the occasion. He was a key player of the Nepali squad during the 1982 Asiad held in Delhi, India.



The 57-year-old was diagnosed with lung and bone cancer in February this year in course of a regular checkup. Two years ago, one of his kidneys was removed.



Bista was also one of the founders of Sunakhari Football Club, which won the domestic league twice in the mid-1970s. He played from Boys Union Club in 1975 and helped the team claim the A division title.
