BAITADI, March 10: Rekha Bohara, 28, a former Maoist combatant, has established herself as an exemplary farmer in her village in Baitadi district.
Following the end of decade-long insurgency, Bohara, a resident of Chandeu-8, settled down with Narendra Bohara, 28, a former Nepal Army who was forced into retirement after loosing leg while fighting against Maoist combatants during the insurgency.
After the peace agreement, both Rekha and Narendra both returned home with Rs 500,000 each. However, they found themselves out of money very fast and were helpless. Later, they joined Good Nutrition Project funded by USAID. The project which aimed at providing sufficient nutrition for pregnant women and their infants encouraged locals to involve in poultry and vegetables farming.
The training provided by the Good nutrition project provided a lot of information to Rekha about poultry and vegetable farming. She learned preparing cages for the chicken, grain feeds, common diseases that chicken are infected with and their preventions, procedures for growing seasonal and off-seasonal vegetables and to prepare organic pesticides. In the years ahead, started poultry and vegetable farming and has been able to earn over 100 thousand in a year by selling vegetables and poultries.
Buoyed by her success, she has been picked up by various organizations for providing encouragement to other villagers. She has been participating in programs of the Department of Cottage and Small Industries (DCSI) to share her story and knowledge with other participants. DCSI in the district has selected her as a role-model farmer for her success and skills.
Recently she participated in a two-day discussion, interaction and training program organized by the DCSI. “I talk about poultry and vegetables farming to help mothers receive sufficient amount of nutrition” said Rekha. In the discussion, she also shared information on the formation of green house for growing off seasonal vegetables in unfavorable climatic conditions. “Apart from that I also shared things I have learned about growing chickens in a natural environment,” she informed.  “In the initial days, I and my husband worked very hard to grow poultry and vegetable farms. As a result of that hard
work, we now have a prosperous life.”
