KATHMANDU, Dec 17: Ram Prasad Bhandari, Acting Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN), mentioned that 70 per cent of the work related to the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election has been completed.

The interim government led by Sushila Karki is mandated to hold the HoR election on March 5, 2026.

In a discussion organized by the ECN with ministers here on Tuesday, Acting Chief Commissioner Bhandari shared that the ECN has been working with determination since the announcement of the election date and vowed to do so.

"There is no alternative to conducting an election by fulfilling certain procedures, and we are committed to holding the election," he observed.

According to him, the ECN, a constitutional body responsible for conducting and monitoring elections, has been receiving two to four memoranda every day, demanding revising the electoral laws and process.

He emphasized the need to amend the laws and regulations related to the ECN and make it timely.

When Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel raised a query regarding controlling election-related expenses, Bhandari said that the ECN was aware of efficient spending during the election.

Bhandari articulated the readiness of the ECN towards addressing the concerns related to controlling expenses during the election.

"We will manage the fund from the State coffers in a very cost-effective manner. We have already demonstrated this frugal approach in the last two parliamentary elections held in 2079 BS," he reminded.

He pledged to strictly cap the limits for the candidates and political parties running for the election.

As for the provision for limiting the expenses of the candidates contesting the election, he explained that expenses will be determined based on the geography of the candidates and the number of voters in the constituency.
