7 die in landslides, flooding

BIRATNAGAR, Aug 20: Seven children have died in Ilam and Siraha districts in landslides and flooding respectively.



In Ilam, four girls, including a six-month old, died Wednesday night when their houses were buried under landslides. [break]



Among the dead are two daughters of Santa Bahadur Rai -- Phulmaya, 12, and Anisha, nine -- of Bahuban, Irautar-8.



Similarly, in Mahamai-9, Samir Man Rai´s daughters -- three-year-old and six-month-old -- were killed in a landslide.



In Siraha, three children drowned in flooding in the swollen Kamala river on Thursday. Mohammad Saharaj, 5, of Saraswar-5, and Mohammad Wakil and Kabi Darji of Saraswar-9 were swept away by the river Thursday afternoon, inspector at the Siraha Police.



Additionally, floods have displaced nine families in Godak and Shantipur villages of Mahamai-9, according to the Regional Police Office Biratnagar.



Owing to another landslide, a section of Mechi Highway has caved in at Siteni of Kolbu-9. Landslide has also disrupted power supply in some parts of Ilam.



Incessant rain and the subsequent flooding in several rivers in eastern Nepal has gravely affected normal life in the region.



Hundreds of houses have been inundated in Birtamod, Arjundhara, Anarmani, and various VDCs. Absence of relief effort has exacerbated the plight of the victims.



In Morang, 48 houses have been inundated by flood in Darbesa-7.



After the flooded Chisa river entered Babusaheb Tole in the district, cultivation in at least 300 bigahas of land has been damaged, and 13 houses have been flooded.



Similarly, the Bakraha river has demolished 25 meters of embankment at Timtim, Itahari-1 of the district.



Water from the Lohandra River has inundated 50 houses in Kadmaha 1 and 2 in the district. Another 30 houses have been inundated in Rangeli 1 and 4. An equal number of houses have been inundated in Babiyabirta.



In Sunsari, 12 families have been displaced in Dewangunj.



Meanwhile, landslides in Betini and Dankhila villages in Bala VDC in Sankhuwasabha district have displaced 60 families on Thursday. Likewise landslide in Tamku VDC in the district has displaced six families.
