“Children, who were very much excited after killing the endangered animal carried its dead body to their school,” said Parabahadur Singh, a local of Giri - 2. According to him, the villagers had not intended to trap the pandas.

“They had set up the trap to kill other wild animals,” Singh said. Red pandas are found in Jantalekh Burase, Lagna, Patane Odar, Dhup, Khaltakuri, Simtara, Kalimuri and Saikumari, among other areas of the district. Headmaster at a local Birendra Aishwarya Higher Secondary School Gorakh Bahadur said villagers do not know that the red pandas are an endangered species need to be protected.

“That is why the red pandas, among other wild animals are massively killed by the poachers and the locals alike,” he added.
