Sompal Kami is one of the brightest stars of the Nepal National Cricket Team. At only 19 years of age, his list of achievements includes a world record set at the Twenty20 International series in 2014—he scored 40 runs out of 31 balls which is the highest score made by a number 10 batsman in the tournament.
An all rounder of the cricket team, Sompal is also the one to set a different trend in bowling in Nepali cricket. Currently busy in his studies, he dreams of seeing Nepal play in the World Cup soon.
Here, he shares with Republica, five lesser known things about him.
He loves singing

An outstanding bowler in the cricket team, Sompal claims to have been blessed with a good singing voice, too. He loved humming different songs since his childhood. The first song he performed on stage was ‘Soniyo’ from the Bollywood movie ‘Raaz’. “I love singing Hindi songs because they’re melodious and catchy. I’m a great fan of Indian singers Sonu Nigam and Mohit
Chauhan,” he says.
He shaped his bowling skills by watching videos online
“Videos are one of the most resourceful learning tools, and besides trainings, I’ve acquired most of my bowling skills by watching cricketers on TV and online,” says Sompal, who, during his childhood days in Punjab, India, spent his time watching cricket videos. “I especially loved watching Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar, and I believe it has helped a lot in improvising my bowling skills,” he shares.
He loves spicy food
“Spices have a great role in determining the taste of food. Adding just a little bit of appropriate spices can make any bland dish tastier. I can’t imagine eating food without any spices,” he says. A great fan of Indian cuisine, Sompal indulges in whipping out a few dishes himself, too. “Rajma Chamal, Paratha and Lassi are my favorite foods,” he shares.
He’s a good runner
“I’ve always been a huge fan of Jamaican athlete Usian Bolt. I admire the way he runs,” says Sompal, who is a good runner himself and has even defeated some regional level players in running competitions. He considers his ability to run fast as one of the major factors that has helped him to get selected in the national squad. “You need to work exceptionally hard to succeed at running, though. Dedication is a must to be successful in any sports”, he shares.
He loves dressing up
Sompal says he has a good sense of style. “I love dressing up, and I feel that my look is never complete without sporting a good pair of shoes,” he shares. A great lover of Converse shoes, he believes that one’s sense of style reflects his/her personality. “Dressing up isn’t merely for covering our bodies. It shows who you are and who you want to be. So I’m always conscious about what I put on,” he says.
