419 cases of VAW registered in a year

KATHMANDU, Sept 7: A total of 419 cases related to domestic violence and Violence Against Woman (VAW) has been registered with the National Women's Commission in a period of one year.

At a press conference held here on Monday, the Commission said 317 cases of domestic violence and 102 cases related to VAW were registered in a year's time. In fiscal year 2071/72, as many as 369 such cases were settled through the National Women's Commission.The Commission also sent 189 victims to the Nepal Bar Association, Legal Aid and Consultancy Center (LACC) and the Centre for Legal Research and Resource Centre for legal assistance. It recommended 11 persons to protected shelters for justice and security, and nine to the police headquarters as the cases concerning them were related to the police.

The Commission usually receives a host of cases related to child marriage, polygamy, expulsion from house, deprivation of food, lack of citizenship resulting in break ups of relationships, mental torture, beating, rape cases, abortion, inter-caste marriage, food and inherited property related violence among others, said Commission Spokesperson Manu Humagain.

A wide range of cases related to violence against woman as polygamy, child marriage, rape cases, accusation of practicing witchcraft, violence emerging from foreign employment, lineage attestation, descendent certificate, altercation, threat, abduction, expulsion from service, murder, acid attack, arson, deprivation of right to foreign employment, slander and insult, and physical attack have been registered in high number in the Commission.

The Commission has been holding public hearing, public awareness enhancement programmes and inspections and monitoring with special precedence in the affected districts. The Commission has also been recommending the cases for legal solution.

Commission Chairperson Sheikh ChandTara said it was high time the government formulated effective legal framework for putting an end to the violence against woman. This is the first annual review programme held by the Commission in 15 years since its establishment. RSS
