SARLAHI, OCt 5: Sarlahi’s Basbariya Rural Municipality recorded 223.6 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Malangawa, the district headquarters, receiving 215.4 mm, according to the local hydrological station. Continuous heavy rain has raised water levels in streams, canals, and the Jaruwa irrigation barrage, sparking fears of flooding and inundation in several parts of the district.

The District Administration Office has urged residents living in low-lying areas and along the banks of the Bagmati, Lakhandehi, Jhim, and Banke rivers to remain alert and take safety precautions, Chief District Officer Tulsi Bahadur Shrestha said.

As water levels rose, all 35 sluice gates of the Bagmati Irrigation Barrage were opened. Engineer Abhimanyu Chaudhary of the project said that canals on both Sarlahi and Rautahat sides were closed to divert water directly into the river.

According to the Paheredobhan monitoring station in Rautahat, the Bagmati River has reached a level of 5.057 meters. The danger level is 6 meters, while 6.8 meters is considered the extreme danger mark. Chaudhary warned that if water continues to rise beyond danger levels, the river dam and other structures could face damage. To prevent risks to the barrage, the irrigation project has kept safety measures ready, including the controlled release of water from an upstream safety dam.
