20 Peace Corps volunteers sworn in

KATHMANDU, Nov 30: Twenty American Peace Corps Volunteers were sworn in on Friday by the US Ambassador to Nepal Peter W Bodde amidst a special function held at the envoy´s residence in the capital.



Finance Minister Barshaman Pun and Peace Corps Chief of Staff Stacy Rhodes (former USAID Nepal Deputy Director 1987-1990) were among those attending the swearing in function-the first since the Peace Corps organization suspended its operations in Nepal in 2004.[break]



According to a press statement issued by the US Embassy in Kathmandu, the Volunteers completed a 12 week Nepali language, culture, and technical training program in Sindhupalchowk before being sworn in.



The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary since the Peace Corps arrived in Nepal in 1962. “The volunteers will work with their Nepali counterparts to promote food security through agriculture, sanitation, and health activities in the three districts of the western region -- Baglung, Syangja, and Parbat,” said the statement.



These volunteers join the ranks of more than 4,200 volunteers, who have served here in Nepal in the past.
