Veteran artist Thapa cremated

The mortal remains of Thapa were draped with the national flag of Nepal, as a gesture of respect for his unparalleled contribution to Nepali art, culture and cinema over several decades.

KATHMANDU, Feb 9: The final rites of veteran artiste of the Nepali film industry, Sunil Thapa, were performed at Pashupati Aryaghat on Sunday.



The mortal remains of Thapa were draped with the national flag of Nepal, as a gesture of respect for his unparalleled contribution to Nepali art, culture and cinema over several decades. 


During the cremation, noted cine artiste Nir Shah, musician Shambhujeet Baskota, representatives of the Film Development Board, office-bearers of the artiste association, filmmakers and family members, as well as relatives, paid their tributes to the late Thapa by draping the national flag.

They also offered a floral tribute. 


Participants at the condolence assembly held thereafter recalled the artistic journey of late Thapa and noted that his contributions would remain immortal in the history of Nepali cinema. 


Thapa passed away last Saturday morning at Thapathali-based Norvic International Hospital due to cardiac arrest. He was 68. Following the completion of the post-mortem at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital at Maharajgunj, his body was taken to Pashupati Aryaghat for funeral rites.


Late Thapa has acted in several Nepali movies, delivering memorable performances over a career spanning several decades. 


Filmmakers mentioned that his acting significantly contributed to elevating Nepali cinema to a new height. They observed that his demise was an irreparable loss to the Nepali film industry; the industry lost an experienced, dedicated and hardworking actor. He was popularly known as Rate Kainla.
