The rates issued by Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB) on Monday show the price of vegetables has dropped by as high as Rs 16 per kg.[break]
Popular vegetables like tomato, potato, cabbage, cauliflower, brinjal, cow pea, green pea, sword bean, bottle gourd, pointed gourd, pumpkin and squash, among others have become cheaper compared to prices of last week.
Price of small tomato has tumbled by Rs 16 per kg, making it Rs 18 per kg. Big tomato has also become cheaper by Rs 8 per kg and is presently selling at Rs 19 per kg. Similarly, price of white potato has dropped to Rs 25 per kg, down from last week´s Rs 21 per kg, while price of cabbage has come down to Rs 12 per kg, down Rs 5 per kg.
Local cauliflower is selling at Rs 19 per kg, lower by Rs 2 per kg compared to last week, while price of long brinjal has come down by Rs 5 per kg to Rs 13 per kg.
Bharat Khatiwada, president of Kalimati Vegetable Wholesalers Association, said price of almost all the vegetables has gone down as it is the peak time to harvest them. “Also supplies have increased from different parts of the country,” he added.
Prices of cow peas and green peas have come down by Rs 6 and Rs 7 per kg, respectively, to Rs 36 and Rs 55 per kg. Sword bean has become cheaper by Rs 13 per kg and is available at Rs 27 per kg.
Bottle gourd and pointed gourd have become cheaper by Rs 4 per kg and 10 per kg, respectively, and are available at Rs 28 per kg and Rs 55 per kg. Pumpkin and squash, too, are selling at a lower price of Rs 16 and Rs 15 per kg, respectively.
According to the board officials, daily arrivals of vegetables at the Kalimati vegetables hover over 700 tons, compared to around 600-650 tons recorded a few weeks ago.
“Vegetable production in the capital as well as other source districts have increased this year, compared to last year. It also contributed to drop in prices,” added Khatiwada. He expected vegetable prices to go down further over the next few weeks.
