SPORTS BRIEFS: Shrestha elected in shitoryu karate

KATHMANDU, July 30: Rajeshbhakta Shrestha was unanimously elected as the president of Nepal Shitoryu Karate Do Association on Saturday. The first general assembly of the association unanimously elected a 17-member committee.



Saral Shumsher Rana and Gyanendra Kumar Jha are the vice-presidents while Dhojman Moktan and Chet Prasad Adhikari are general secretary and secretary respectively. Pritamlal Shrestha is the treasurer of the committee. [break]



Dhital finishes 82nd


KATHMANDU: Shreya Dhital of Nepal finished in the 82nd spot in women´s 50 meter freestlye in the 14th FINA (Swimming) World Championship being held in Shangai, China on Saturday. Dhital covered the distance in 32.44 seconds. Earlier, Shreya had set a national record in women´s 100 meter freestyle at the championship. Prasiddha Jung Shah and Shailesh Rana had competed earlier in men´s 100 and 50 meter freestyle respectively.



AFC Referee Course concludes


KATHMANDU: The three-day AFC Referee Course for SAFF Countries concluded in the capital on Saturday. The course, organized with a view to produce competent referees from South Asian countries, was participated by 23 referees and assistant referees of the region except Bhutan and Afghanistan. The best 17 from among them will conduct the matches of the SAFF U-16 Football Tournament to be held in Kathmandu from Monday. AFC referee instructor Awri Abdel Kahim from Jordan and Moradi Masoud Hasnali from Iran along with Buddhi Bahadur Gurung and Surendra Shikhrakar from Nepal had conducted the training. South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) General Secretary Alberto Colaso gave away the certificates to the participants. The course conducted by All Nepal Football Association was supported by SAFF and Asian Football Confederation (AFC).



Suwal, Pancha win


KATHMANDU: Sagar Suwal and Indrabhakta Pancha on Saturday won the title of Bhaktapur District-wide Open Invitational Doubles Badminton organized by Bhaktapur Badminton Club. The duo from the host club defeated Navin Prajapati and Krishna Sundra Khaitu´s pair of the same club 17-21, 21-11, 21-12. Shyam Sundar Khaiju and Badri Khaitu´s pair and Satyaram Tistu and Rajesh Khaitu´s pair shared the third spot. Nepal Badminton Association President Prakash Bahadur Shahi awarded trophies, medals and certificates to the winners.



Nepal to face India, Sri Lanka


KATHMANDU: The Nepali U-16 (youth) boys basketball squad will vie for a place in the 2nd FIBA Asian Championship for Youth Boys with India and Sri Lanka at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, India from August 1-3. The top team will qualify for the 2nd FIBA Asian Championship for Youth Boys to be held in Nha Trang city, Vietnam from October 18-28. The Nepali team had left for the tournament on Thursday. Before leaving for India, the coach and team members said they will have a tough game against India but they are confident of defeating other teams.
