SPORTS BRIEFS: Odyssey, Deneb in semis

KATHMANDU, Dec 13: Odyssey International Academy and the host Deneb International School entered into the semifinals of junior boys´ category of the Second Deneb Valley-wide Inter School Basketball Tournament.

Deneb defeated Innovative 34-24 on Tuesday on their home court at New Baneshwar. Birendra Sen scored 16 points for the winning side. Odyssey struggled hard to pull off a 21-20 win over Kathmandu English School (KES). [break]

Likewise, Teresa Academy and Gyan Niketan booked their berths in the semifinal. Teresa thrashed Whitefield 17-9 and Gyan Niketan edged past Canvas 27-14. Jwala Budha scored 23 points for Gyan Niketan. Deneb will take on Odyssey in the semifinal on Wednesday while Teresa will lock horns with Gyan Niketan. In senior girls´ section, TIA will take on Galaxy while Teresa will meet HEMS in semifinal.

Gurung to lead sepak takraw

KATHMANDU: The first congress of the Nepal Sepak Takraw Association elected Dhruba Bahadur Gurung as president of its executive committee on Tuesday. The 16-member executive committee was elected unanimously by the congress. Puran Kunwar and Padam Prasad are vice presidents in the newly elected committee, where Netra Prasad Gurung is general secretary.

Sitaram Gurung was elected for the post of secretary while Jiwan Kumar Rai and Prakash Katwal are elected for the posts of treasurer and deputy-treasurer respectively. Tek Bahadur Limbu, Sudarshan Pradhan, Sabitri Adhikari, Ganga Bahadur Gurung, Lok Mani Aatreya, Sushila Rai, Manoj Paudel, Jitendra Thapa Magar and Rabin Nagarkoti are members of the executive committee.

Morgan, Golden Gate reach semis

KATHMANDU: Morgan and Golden Gate secured berths in the semifinals of the First Sachindra Memorial Men´s Open Basketball Tournament. Morgan thumped Bajra 77-11 on Tuesday to secure semifinal berth from group ´B´ while Golden Gate edged past the host Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC) 71-58 to secure berth among last four from group ´A´. Meanwhile, NCC G´sters defeated Bhanimandal 47-40 in another group stage match on Tuesday. The tournament is organized in the memory of late Sachindra Shrestha, who was a co-pilot with Tara Airlines and lost his life in a crash on December 15 last year.

Hamal finishes second in Kolkata

KATHMANDU: FIDE Master Manish Hamal finished second in the HDCA International Chess Tournament held in Kolkata, India. Hamal defeated Nepali player Krishna Thapa in the ninth round and shared point with Haidar Ajay of India in the last round played on Tuesday. Hamal garnered 8.5 points to secure the second position, while Haidar Ajay clinched the top spot on the basis of better progressive points despite having equal 8.5 points.

Thapa, who was defeated by Hamal in the ninth round, finished in the 16th place with seven points. Thapa played a draw with Kaush Kutumba of India. Other Nepali players, Herakaji Maharjan, Prachanda Malakar and Bijay Man Shrestha scored six points apiece.

Samajik, Tusal triumph

KATHMANDU: Samajik Yuva Club and Tusal Youth Club emerged victorious on Tuesday in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League being held at the Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj. Samajik saw off Kumari Club and Tusal edged past Boys Union with the identical score of 1-0. Prabin Kumar Syangtan scored the decisive goal for Samajik four minutes from time. Samajik now has 10 points from eight matches while Kumari has five points.

Similarly, Shyam Babu Kakshapati scored the lone goal in the fourth minute to seal the victory for Tusal. Tusal climbed to the seventh spot with 14 points from nine matches. Boys Union dropped to the eighth position with 13 points.
