Souls of my city: Sports star on a wheelchair

Tilak Tharu was an ardent football player as a child. But at 19, Tharu was left immobile with a broken spine after an injury,. “My father blames football for my disability. He says it’s the reason that I am on a wheelchair” stated the 25-year-old Tharu.

Tilak Tharu was an ardent football player as a child. But at 19, Tharu was left immobile with a broken spine after an injury,. “My father blames football for my disability. He says it’s the reason that I am on a wheelchair” stated the 25-year-old Tharu.



However, despite his disability, Tharu made a switch to basketball a year ago. He had been receiving training at the spinal rehab center until he shifted to Kathmandu a few weeks back. He still continues his training in the capital too. But alongside basketball, Tharu is also learning to carve bamboos sticls into artistic household materials.

Hoping for better days, Tharu stated, “We can’t reverse time, but I have not lost my strength. In Kathmandu, I met many others like myself. Their company gave me the strength to move ahead.”
